Atopica
Atopic dermatitis (neurodermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by extremely dry skin and intense itching. Around 3% of the adult population worldwide is affected. Managing the disease often requires daily medication, continuous symptom monitoring, and awareness of individual triggers, which can be physically and emotionally demanding.
Atopica is a conceptual mobile application designed to support people living with atopic dermatitis in their everyday lives. The project aims to help users better understand their condition, document their symptoms, and feel more in control of their disease. A key feature of the app is the panic button, which is intended to provide immediate support in acute situations and help interrupt the itch–scratch cycle.
Research — Understanding the Challenges
The research phase focused on understanding both the medical background of atopic dermatitis and the daily challenges faced by those affected. This included studying the symptoms, triggers, and treatment methods associated with the condition, as well as reviewing existing digital health applications in this field.
Research revealed that many patients struggle with consistently documenting symptoms, identifying patterns between flare-ups and triggers, and managing long-term treatment routines. Emotional stress and sudden itching episodes were identified as critical moments where immediate support is needed. These insights highlighted the importance of a tool that combines medical documentation with real-time assistance and emotional relief.
Strategy
The core strategy behind Atopica is to empower users through self-awareness and self-management. Rather than focusing solely on medical data, the app addresses the lived experience of a chronic condition and supports users in both routine and acute situations.
Atopica is designed to function as a daily companion that helps users track symptoms, record triggers, and visualize affected areas of the body. By collecting this data over time, users can recognize patterns and gain insights into their personal disease progression. The panic button plays a central strategic role by offering immediate intervention during high-stress moments, helping users regain control and reduce harmful scratching behavior.
Design
The design of Atopica follows a user-centered approach with a strong emphasis on clarity, accessibility, and emotional calm. The interface is intentionally minimal and intuitive, allowing users to navigate the app easily even during stressful or uncomfortable moments.
A soft color palette, clear typography, and simple interactions were chosen to create a sense of safety and reduce cognitive load. Visual elements such as body maps enable users to mark affected skin areas in an intuitive way, while reminders and documentation features are seamlessly integrated into daily routines. Overall, the design aims to support users without overwhelming them, positioning Atopica as a supportive and trustworthy digital companion.
