Blossom is a conceptual app project focused on raising awareness about winter depression and providing meaningful support for those affected. The goal was to help users better understand depressive symptoms, distinguish between seasonal and long-term depression, identify potential causes, and explore ways to cope. The project combines educational content with empathetic design to create a supportive and accessible digital experience.

Research

At the beginning of the project, we conducted interviews with affected individuals to gain a deep understanding of their needs, expectations, and pain points. These insights formed the foundation for our How Might We questions and our Question Zero, which guided the entire conceptual process. By focusing on real experiences and emotional challenges, we ensured that the app addresses sensitive topics with empathy and clarity.

Based on the research findings, we developed a clear concept and information architecture that translated complex mental health topics into an understandable and user-friendly structure. Existing ideas from an earlier design sprint were evaluated and refined, allowing us to build on proven concepts while improving clarity and usability. Key features, such as the check-in function, were retained and further developed as central touchpoints for user interaction and self-reflection.

Design

The visual design of Blossom is inspired by the color gradient of a sunset, symbolizing calm, transition, and hope. A rich purple tone defines primary elements, while orange is used to highlight selected states and confirm interactions. Typography and icons appear in a dark blue to create strong contrast against the soft background. Subtle background variations—such as in pop-ups—add depth and visual interest while maintaining a calm and supportive atmosphere. The result is an empathetic, visually cohesive interface that supports users emotionally while guiding them through the app experience.

Result: A thoughtful and user-centered app concept that educates, supports, and empowers individuals affected by winter depression through clear structure, empathetic strategy, and emotionally resonant design.
